This week's GWA meeting was an effort to begin the process of setting up some group projects. The following projects were discussed and will be pursued based on their individual member interest.
Equipment Cabinet - Our Saturday meeting sophistication has increased and with it the need for a better system of audio and other support features for speakers and presentations. To secure our equipment on site at Stone Mountain Power Tools we need some new form of cabinet. This is going to be an involved project that absolutely must have a clear, agreed upon list of needs as we proceed. Once the needs are set a design must be crafted and plans must be created in order for construction to commence.
City of Lilburn - Possible city parks projects - Lilburn Mayor Jack Bolton spoke to us briefly at Bert Lunsford's invitation. The city is creating some new parks and may have some opportunities for woodworking projects such as bird houses and sign shelters.
Cancer Survivors - Marty Huzcek has volunteered to manage this project to make as many cancer survivor doves as possible. Marty has the pattern with can be used for scroll saw, carving or other projects. Marty will be in charge of delivering any and all units created to the Suburban Oncology center where they will be distributed to cancer survivors.
Dresser Top Valet - Ken Vickery suggested this project from the plans in the May 2005 issue of Wood magazine. This type of project provides opportunities for participants to learn and use a wide variety of woodworking skills, interact with other members and join in the fun of comparing their finished project with others.
Dust collection system - Will Reid intends to build a cyclone dust collection system for his shop. The more we learn about the dangers of wood dust the more necessary these systems are for even small shops. This project will be for those might be contemplating the acquisition of improved dust collection for their own shop.
There are many benefits in working on group projects:
benefiting worthy internal or outside causes,
increasing your woodworking skills and the skills of fellow woodworkers,
getting to know other members better and learning about shared interests,
having a great time, seeing other people's shops, and much more.
What do we need from you? We need you to get interested, get involved and have a good time working on something fun and interesting to you.
