Bob shared a lot of ideas and tips in this week's class on making raised panel doors. His tool of choice is a router table although we discussed other options.
An issue that stymies many woodworkers new to making raised panel doors is getting the correct measurements for the rails, stiles and panels. Bob explained the math behind the process noting that it depends on your particular set of router bits and the way you plan to mount your panels.
Bob explained the difference between flush and proud panels and explained some of the nuances in setting up your panel cutting bit.
A lot of discussion took place in this class including how to determine the rail length by using the door's outside dimensions (which you should know from the start) and the stiles that you've already cut. Also mentioned were ways to hold the panels in place including pinning the panels, placing a drop of glue in the center of the rail's panel slot, and using various spacing devices including gasket materials and space balls (small rubber BBs).
There were several local places mentioned to look for door hardware such as hinges and knobs as well as a place to get the same square channel tubing that Bob used to keep the doors flat while gluing and clamping. The list of places mentioned included:
Morrison's Hardware in Chamblee
Allied Cabinet Supply
Eugenia's Antique Hardware Store in Chamblee (www.eugeniaantiquehardware.com)
Metal Supermarket on Pleasantdale Rd. (www.metalsupermarkets.com)
Many thanks to Bob Brokaw for his extensive work in preparing for and presenting this great class.
