Ted Baldwin, GWA member and past president of the Woodworkers Guild of Georgia, taught our most recent class on Box Making. He emphasizes building things you enjoy, showcasing the natural beauty of wood, and putting safety first.
Ted made an excellent point about interrupting a woodworker. If machinery is running DO NOT interrupt the person working with the machinery. Doing so often can startle them and even a momentary lapse in attention could result in serious harm. It is best to wait until the machinery is stopped or wait for the woodworker to notice you.
It is difficult to summarize Ted's classes because he offers so much useful and interesting information. Contrary to last week's great Incra Jig class where precision in making joints was a primary objective, Ted's simply approach is to convert any mistakes into design changes. Very good advice for stress relief when you cut one piece too short or put a hole where it wasn't supposed to be.
Ted showed us how to use an auxiliary fence and table made of 1/2" or 3/8" MDF on your miter saw. The resulting zero clearance table and fence simplifies the sequential miter cuts for the box sides with the least waste on the outside of the box sides. This technique is essential for making the grain look continuous around the box.
I'm sure we will have Ted back again soon for more on bringing simplicity and interest to our woodworking projects. Many thanks to Ted for a fantastic class. As a follow-up to today's class, Smitty Highsmith's show-and-tell was a scroll sawn portrait for the family of one of our fallen soldiers. If any of our members would like to volunteer to make these portraits they can find out more at: http://groups.msn.com/portraitfreedom.
