This week's "Using an Incra Jig" class was enlightening whether you own any sort of Incra Jig or not. Ken Vickery described the Incra Jig as a fence positioning device that brings a higher level of precision and repeatability to most woodworking operations.
The Incra Jig is intended for repeated joint cutting operations like dovetails and finger joints. However, with the examples presented in this class the improved accuracy can accent your woodworking projects in a number of ways. Not only will the improved fit of your joints show better, but the decorative double finger joints and dovetails, corner post dovetails, and even double, double dovetails can make a ordinary project look extraordinary.
Setup is the key to working with an Incra Jig as demonstrated by Don Stotts. Don made dovetails on the four sides of a box in a matter of minutes. He demonstrated how simple the process is with an Incra Jig, but also how critical the initial setup is for a satisfying result. This hands-on demonstration confirmed Ken's earlier comments about how useful and important it is to read the well written instructions that come with the jig for your planned operation. Nathan Austhof's examples on the steps to making double, double dovetails again made the process seem doable even if the setup might take some time.
Ken Vickery highly recommended the "Incra Jig Projects & Techniques" book by Perry McDaniel as an adjunct to the Incra Jig manual.
Thanks to Don, Ken and Nathan for contributing their time to teach this enlightening and very interesting class.
