Clarence Towns and Ted Riggs taught this week's class on building drawers. Clarence talked about why simple butt joints are not used in drawers due to the possibly high failure rate. He showed a great example of machine cut dovetails he made along with the jig and router setup.
Also discussed were using drawer lock bits, sliding dovetails and hand cut dovetails. Then Ted showed us the tools and techniques involved in making hand cut dovetails. He discussed the gains in flexibility and creativity by using hand cut dovetails in contrast to most machine cut dovetails.
Clarence and Ted talked about drawer slides and hardware and mentioned that we should consider another class in the future on drawer hardware.
Other members attending the class mentioned a couple of places in town to look for hardware besides the normal big box and chain stores. The two mentioned were Eugenia's Antiques and Collectibles, 5370 Peachtree Rd, Chamblee (770.458.1677) (http://www.eugeniaantiquehardware.com) and HGH Hardware, 1855-A Beaver Ridge Circle, Norcross, GA 30071 (770.248.9501) (http://www.hghhardware.com).
Thanks Clarence and Ted for this informative and interesting class.
