(Part 1 of 2) – Ted Baldwin and George Atkinson are long time GWA members who have conducted workshops at both Rockler Woodworking and John C.Campbell.  In this 2 part workshop, they will cover the following box making topics:

 

(1)  How to determine a box size and shape.

(2)  How to determine what part of the wood piece will be used for the top or the front of the box.

(3)  How to cut box sides, so the grain is continuous around any shape box.

(4)  How to make the inside shape different from the outside shape on:

       (a) A glued up box with miter corners.

       (b) A box routed out of solid wood.

(5)  How to draw a box shape on paper and cut it out using your drawing only:

       (a)With mitered corners.

       (b)Out of a solid piece of wood.

(6)  How to cut acute angles on any saw.

(7)  When not to use acute angles in your box design.

(8)  How to mark and cut a bottom to fit any shape box and make it fit:

       (a) Recessed

       (b) Flush

(9)  How to mark and cut a top to fit any shape box, and make it fit:

       (a) Flush with sides.

       (b) Overhang 1/8” to 5/8”

(10) How to glue box sides and bottom.

(11) What to do if you don’t have a piece of wood wide enough to make the top or if it is a different shape than the sides.

(12) How to route any odd shaped box out of solid wood.

(13) What to do if your miters are not perfect:

       (a) The ends stick out past the corner of the mating miter.

       (b) The bottom or top edge of the miters are not flush.

(14) How to add accents to your box.

(15) How not to twist heads off those brass screws.

(16) If you do twist the heads off those brass screws, how to remove them.

(17) How to flock the inside of your box.
