I've sat on one before and I've wondered how someone managed to do it. Today, Randy Tarner showed us how to weave a rush chair seat. Rush was originally made by twisting cattail leaves, but today's most common rush material is a heavy brown paper twisted to form the strand. It can be purchased at local hardware and craft supply stores usually in quantities by the pound.

Randy's wry humor made for an excellent class as he explained the process of rushing a chair and pointed out many of the pitfalls to avoid. He explained how to end up with a square weave on a trapezoidal chair seat frame by first weaving segments on the left and right front corners. Then he wove several rounds on the seat frame highlighting the method needed and several of the ways you can mess it up if you get distracted.

Bill Rucker followed with a brief explanation of the materials and techniques needed to cane a chair. It is interesting how complicated some projects seem until you see it done and find out that the most complicated tool you may need is a spoon.

Thanks Randy and Bill for this excellent class. Click HERE for pictures from this class.
