This week’s class on Marquetry and Inlay was presented by Jane Burke with an assist by Bob Brokaw. Jane’s experience in conducting training and creating award winning Marquetry projects was obvious.

Jane’s technique is one she developed through trial and error. The small number of tools, allows a beginner to complete a Marquetry project without a major investment in tools. All that is required is two knives, a ruler, and a cutting board. The consumable supplies are masking tape, PVA glue, some veneer and a substrate for each project.

We saw how the original paper pattern gives way to the Marquetry project becoming the pattern for each additional piece. This method, combined with careful attention to knife angle results in undetectable seams with no gaps. Jane also demonstrated the use of hot sand to add a smoothly graduated tone to a piece of veneer. The result was a dramatic increase in contrast and depth.

Bob explained the need for and demonstrated how to flatten veneers that have buckled from humidity. Then Jane and Bob demonstrated two types of vacuum bagging systems that can be used to glue the Marquetry to a substrate. This technique is very usefull on larger projects that are difficult to clamp.

Thank you, Jane and Bob. It was a great class.
