This week’s class on fretwork was taught by Marty Huczek. Marty showed us many fine examples of his elaborate fretwork as well as some scroll sawn inlay and intarsia boxes.

He began with a quick explanation that fretwork involves inside cuts, and how pin end blades do not allow the level of fine detail that can be accomplished with a plain end blade. Crown, or two-way, blades, a fluorescent light / magnifier, and planning each cut are his keys to high quality results.

Marty told us about the magazines and other sources he uses to obtain paterns. He also explained how you can make changes to personalize a pattern. He emphasized that a thorough understanding of complex projects is essential before beginning to cut. Any variation in wood thickness could require dimension changes for mortises and interlocking slots.

While many were intimidated by the complexity and number of cuts, Marty explained that he finds it relaxing to simply make one cut after another with no deadline for completion. Although he made it seem simple, we are well aware that each cut must be executed with care.

Thanks Marty, for a great presentation.
