This weeks presentation was by Phil Tanner on "Making a Violin", except Phil makes fiddles. He is a very entertaining musician with a local, multi-generational, family band.
The Skilletlickers II
"Old Tyme String Band"
Phil took us through all the steps starting with purchasing the quarter sawn figured wood and making the mold for the body. For the process of forming the sides, top and bottom he showed some of the planes his father made for planing/scraping the curve in the top and bottom. The greatest challenge is carving the scroll and he showed examples. He tuned and played three fiddles to show differences in sound from each. His ending with a performance of "Orange Blossom Special" thrilled us all.
Many, many thanks Phil. This was special.
