Toys with Purpose: Building Joy for Appalachian Kids

On October 11th, Daniel Doster will present a heartfelt and hands-on session at GWA, showcasing the wooden toys he builds and donates each Christmas. His inspiration began at The Craddock Center, a mission in Cherry Log, GA, where he saw a toy truck that sparked his own design journey. For the past three years, Doster has crafted these trucks for Appalachian children, many of whom would go without holiday gifts if not for donations like his. Numerous woodworking clubs contribute to this cause annually.
During the class, Doster will demonstrate how a simple 2x4 transforms into a finished toy truck in just 45 minutes. He’ll walk through each step of the process, highlighting the shop tools and techniques that bring this generational gift to life.
He’ll also share a second project: a wooden car inspired by his desire to give his granddaughters something handmade from his shop. When they were just one and two-and-a-half years old, he wanted to send them a keepsake from “Opa” that they could treasure.
We welcome Daniel Doster on a very special occasion—the installation of officers for GWA. This is not just a class; it’s a pivotal moment for our association. Everyone needs to be in attendance for this important meeting as we chart the exciting future of GWA together.
