It was obvious! Ed Tingley was having fun today. And, that's why he turns pens and why he was teaching us all about pen turning in today's class. In a little over an hour Ed stepped us through the entire process of turning a pen and covered a lot of tips and tricks along the way. In a nutshell he covered:
Selecting the wood (or other materials)
Cutting Blanks into two pieces using a home made bandsaw jig
Drilling Blanks using a home made and commercial jig to hold the blanks vertical
Gluing the Barrel into the Blank using thick CA glue (24 hour epoxy was also suggested)
Reaming and Trimming the Blank using bits matched to the pen kit
Setting up the Pen Turning Mandrill (recommended an adjustable mandrill)
The Importance of Using Appropriate Bushings for your specific pen kit
Turning Pen Bodies using the bushings as a guide
Sanding from 400 to 1200 and burnishing with newsprint
Finishing with thin CA glue then Hut CrystalCut
and Assembling the Pen by CAREFULLY following the downloadable instructions
Thanks Ed for a very well done, interesting and informative class. Now it is more obvious why so many people enjoy turning pens. Thanks also to Bob Brokaw and Ken Vickery for providing this week's pictures.
