Ron Brown, GWA Founder, lead this week's class on how to select a router. After showing a wide range of router sizes, bases and features Ron discussed in detail many of the reasons for selecting one router over another. As with most woodworking equipment decisions the selection of a router depends first and foremost on whether it will do the job at hand. Ron suggested that you should evaluate routers as if they were all the same price. Compare features, read reviews in magazines and online forums and discussions, go to your local woodworking equipment store and put your hands on all the routers to get a personal feel for ease-of-use in your application, and whenever possible turn it on to see how it sounds and feels (be sure to read, understand and follow the safety rules for the equipment you are testing).
After you have made your comparisons and selected your top three or so choices, then take a look at the price of each one and select the one that best meets your overall objectives. Someone asked Ron, "When should we tell our wives (spouses) about the impending purchase?". The question was answered and there were numerous comments. Ron's best answer was worth repeating so at his request we are offering it here as Making the Case for a New Tool (

Thanks Ron for an interesting and informative class. Thanks also for filling it at the last minute. Thanks to Bob Brokaw and Ken Vickery for making this week's pictures available.
