Ted Riggs discussed some of the major power tools that may be needed in your woodworking shop.  He covered a lot of ground quickly emphasizing that your choice of tools depends on the types of woodworking operations you must do.

For cutting he discussed table saws, radial arm saws, scroll saws, band saws and jig saws.  His suggested 'first saw' for a beginning woodworker was the band saw.  The band saw can be used for a broader range of cutting operations than most saws.

For flattening operations Ted discussed primarily the jointer, but pointed out that with appropriate jigs a number of other tools can be used for this operation including a planer, table saw and radial arm saw.

For shaping operations the discussion centered on routers and shapers.  A router is definitely more versatile which explains why so many people indicated that they already own three or more routers.

Thanks Ted for a useful and informative class that was a perfect precursor to next week's class by the Delta folks covering Porter Cable routers, Delta table saws, drill presses, blades and accessories.  Thanks also to Bob Brokaw and Ken Vickery for the pictures and to Jim Myrick for the video camera work.
