Lots of space, the right pieces and sizes of equipment, a well managed environment, challenging projects, and time to work. If this describes your workshop and woodworking then you are truly blessed. It does, in my opinion, describe the most interesting facilities at the CDC woodshop where Gwinnett Woodworkers Association members were treated to a tour arranged by our own Jim Myrick, a CDC employee and GWA Treasurer.
But, with all this opportunity, environment and equipment, what's left? What are you missing? Perhaps the inspired, creative genius of a trained and experienced woodworker. And, that's what we witnessed first-hand in our tour guide, Mr. Fred Shuttleworth. Fred's presentation proved unequivocally that he is an inspired and creative woodworker. He is well able to work from an exhaustively detailed plan or the nebulous hand-waiving description of a client's mental pictures. The CDC should definitely count themselves lucky to have someone of Fred's caliber. Given the necessary resources it is apparent that Fred's shop has and will continue to be a creative and cost-effective solution for the CDC's needs.
If you missed the tour, the pictures will give you a small taste of the experience, but the only way to really appreciate the opportunities and accomplishments from the CDC's woodshop is to be there and listen to Fred's enthusiasm for his job. Maybe we can schedule a return visit in the future. I know I would like to spend more time there.
Our many thanks go to Jim Myrick for suggesting and coordinating this great tour and presentation. Thanks also to Ricky Alexander for helping with the site-entry logistics. GWA especially thanks Fred Shuttleworth for making the time to share with us some of his accomplishments and for the educational and enlightening tour. And, lastly, thanks to Ken Vickery for making the time to take and prepare these pictures. The only thing left is for us to convince Fred to join us as a GWA member. I know that we would all benefit from a closer relationship.
