We were privileged this week to have as our guest presenter Wayne Sutter - President and co-owner of Woodline USA. Headquartered in Lebanon, Tennessee Woodline sells a broad selection of router bits and quite a range of other woodworking items. If you are a GWA member be sure to mention that when you place an order.
Wayne presented and demonstrated, for the first time to a woodworking group, his soon-to-be-released clock gear set templates for pin routing using your existing router table. The HDPE template set will include all the twelve gears you will need for a clock as well as several helpful template gauges. The set will be part of a kit that will include detailed instructions and a small bag of 'stuff' necessary to make a clock that will last and run for a long time.
Pivotal to making acceptable clock gears is starting with the right material for the gears. Wayne has used a variety of laminated hardwoods including walnut, purpleheart, cherry, and bloodwood glued with urethane glue in a vacuum press. Grain orientation is important to keep the resulting laminate flat after you've removed large sections of the material to leave just the toothed rim and spokes.
Using Woodline's new clock gear templates most woodworkers can produce a complete clock gear in under an hour. Try that with your scroll saw or band saw. Of course if you have your own Shopbot you can program your own gear cutting programs. But, now you will be able to do the same thing on your existing router table for around $150.00 using Wayne's clock kit. The kit will be much more than just a set of templates and bag of miscellaneous stuff because it will include volumes of information on clock building that may help you design your own custom clock layouts and designs.
As a GWA member, if you are interested in purchasing a clock gear kit with the templates and bag of stuff as soon as it is available, email Wayne at Wayne@Woodline.com. Be sure to put the words 'Wood Gears' in the subject line of your email. Wayne will add you to the list and will contact you when the first kits are available.
Our thanks to Wayne Sutter for a fun and educational presentation. I know there will be several clocks showing up as show-and-tell in the coming months.
